Well we have lfs-release and not os-release now.  I'm not sure what this fork adds.  Right now it only copies a couple of files.

/etc/os-release is used by systemd to identify the distro. This version still uses /etc/lsb-release, and is newer than the one currently in the book. Besides that, I have no arguments on why it should be updated, hence why I posted here first.
