I'm not certain that was the only reason, but I don't have time right
now to look. Please consider FHS as well. If /usr is a separate mount,
even if a local filesystem, then it is always mounted after the $time
facility is started (udev) and the symlink is to /usr. I'm not sure it
matters, as it's not dependent, it's just an offset, but wanted to drop
a note quick to make sure it is considered. I actually thought I had
accounted for that in the logging code way back in 2012 but I might be
mistaken. I think it probably is fine, but I am unable to verify right
this second. If nothing else, just a note about it in LFS. Maybe just my
opinion, but I've always viewed LFS as the teaching book and, hence, far
more important to be accurate WRT specs than in BLFS where, while still
important, we have some leeway WRT functionality (as much as all other
distros do anyway). We've still got a couple of days to add a note if
needs be.
