I'm going to change /etc/localtime to a symlink.  The reason we wanted the time correct without /usr mounted was to have the timestamp in the logs correct.
I'm not certain that was the only reason, but I don't have time right now to look. Please consider FHS as well. If /usr is a separate mount, even if a local filesystem, then it is always mounted after the $time facility is started (udev) and the symlink is to /usr. I'm not sure it matters, as it's not dependent, it's just an offset, but wanted to drop a note quick to make sure it is considered. I actually thought I had accounted for that in the logging code way back in 2012 but I might be mistaken. I think it probably is fine, but I am unable to verify right this second. If nothing else, just a note about it in LFS. Maybe just my opinion, but I've always viewed LFS as the teaching book and, hence, far more important to be accurate WRT specs than in BLFS where, while still important, we have some leeway WRT functionality (as much as all other distros do anyway). We've still got a couple of days to add a note if needs be.
