My configure output looked nothing like yours. Configure wasn't even
checking for clang. I decided to check the md5sum on the source tarball
and sure enough mine didn't match the book. I downloaded it again from
the link in the book and everything matches now. The source tarball for
it on the mirrors (at least osu) is the problem.
Evidently upstream made a stealth update. The original file was
uploaded Nov 2016 and was correct at the time. The current file has a
date of Dec 2016 and is about 2 KB larger than the previous version.
I have updated the osu repository.
