Fetchmail has a 'daemon' mode. The initscript template is easily adapted to start it at boot. I think sylpheed has been mentioned. I had a phase where I tried almost every email client out there and came back to Evo in the end. Trouble it's getting a bit heavyweight now. Sort of moves away from the Unix philosophy of a tool per job.
