Not a full length read-it-only-when-you-are-desparate HOWTO, I hope.

I've done it a couple of times by the seat of the pants. I have a gcc
with /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i586-pc-linux-gnu, and went compiling with an i686
cpu and there was no hassle. fstab and your X config were the only
serious changes I remember. The gcc it created had
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu

Even now I have an lfs (3.3) from somewhere on a hard disk that I
use to stick into other boxes to run or investigate some 'trailing edge'
technology with. It has lilo on the first partition. Jumper it as a
master, make it hda1 and you're away.
