Guessing that these weren't set at build time? Sounds very similar to
my issues the other day. As asked previously, how far did you go into
the Gnome install? And here are my settings, only a guess, but try in
this order:

# Assuming GNOME_PREFIX=/usr
export XDG_DATA_HOME=/usr/share
export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share:/etc/gnome/xdg
export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/gnome/xdg
update-desktop-database
startx

I have the GNOME_PREFIX=/opt/gnome, and have exported accordingly. I have not done 'export XDG_DATA_HOME' though. I will do that and will report the results back. I have reloaded the 'Gnome Core Packages' and am in the process of installing some of the additional packages. Somehow, my 'gst-plugins' was'nt happy building with 'cairo'. So I had to disable 'cairo'. I
suppose that should not have any adverse repercussions.

Many thanks for your response, Lucas. Will get back on it further.

Regards

RSP
