This isn't really my place to say, but is you're sister going to know
the difference between GNOME 2.10 and 2.12, GTK 2.6 and 2.8 and ATK
1.10?

Sure not! It's just me wanting to toy with cutting edge software to be honest. On the other hand I'm trying to find something that will somehow justify the long wait in her eyes - Cairo is meant to speed up things quite a bit, and that's why it's luring me so much. She was running 2.8 just a month ago - and from what I read and hear, there should be a noticeable difference is ui responsivness.

Furthermore, unless you're going to be there providing constant
support for bugs, why not give her a more stable system to use?

As for support I know I will need to be there. Well, at least remotely. That's why the first thing I installed on that box after LFS was OpenSSH :-)

Besides... truth to be told, I've already decided - and two nights ago wiped out all gnome-related or gnome-maintained (so to speak) packages. Now... well, now it's just up to Gnome folks really ie. if they arrive on schedule and (more importantly) if they get rid of worst bugs before announcing 2.12.

Don't mean to be a jerk about that, you can build the system however
you want, but I've been seduced by same pitfalls before.

Yes Dan, I know that from resonable point of view my way of building this system is not wise at all. I should just install stable packages and enjoy doing other things than eg. rebuilding GTK 2.8 yet one *more* time cos it crashes everytime my sis fires up totem... But as I've just told you I love new apps, and since it's not a 'production server' (like my small HLFS-powered router) I want to give them a go. But thanks for your voice all the same!

Best regards,
David Ciecierski
