I failed to notice a section like this there
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
That bit tells it which lines to use.
I would also mention that I have had unusual behaviour traced to
borderline specs. Let's say you have 62khz as hor. synch and the
modeline turns out to be 62.4.
