I'm trying to get KDE working on my LFS box and I've encountered an usual problem. I've been able to get XFree86 installed successfully and I've been able to install other applications through twm. KDE 3.4.1 built with no problems and when I tried to start it, the configuration wizard came up followed by the splash screen. After the splash screen has cleared, I'm left with a grey screen with a pointer and nothing else. It's just hung there.
Are you following the book by putting _only_ "exec startkde" in your .xinitrc, or are you trying to start kde from an already running X session with twm ?
When I investigate the error messages I get this: _XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for inet6 _XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inet6/wrasse:0 _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for inet6
Like others, I think these messages are harmless
startkde: Starting up... kded: ERROR: Error: standard icon theme "crystalsvg" not found! kbuildsycoca running... kded: WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype KDEDModule not found kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING: KLibrary: /usr/lib/kde3/kcm_kdnssd.so: undefined symbol: init_kdnssd
google suggests this might be associated with using nvidia drivers, or flakey setup of user account, and is probably associated with some loss of eye candy.
QFont::setPointSize: Point size <= 0 (-3)
this might be more catastrophic, possibly a problem in your font configuration. Check the archives for people's fontconfig problems (usually affects gnome users).
Hopefully, just a misleading error message (e.g. the font error wasn't expected).artsmessage: ERROR: Error: standard icon theme "crystalsvg" not found!
