Precompiled binaries often requires this library (Firefix do, for
example). I think the purpose is to have compatibility with older
systems.

I've also downloaded the binary package and I've had the same problem,
solved the same way. Acrobat is useful for me because of the plugin
for Firefox that allow me to view pdf documents inside the browser.
For any other application, kpdf (for those using KDE) is perfect and
it render documents as well as Acrobat.
