In fact, I can't run any program when LD_ASSUME_KERNEL is set to 2.4.0.
Yes I had thought about that after I posted it. We use
--enable-kernel=2.6.0.
Above issue looks like it's a glibc problem. See redhat and gentoo resp.

It isn't yet explained why the issue is not seen while running gnome as
of yet, however. Anyone have any ideas? I'm putting the last few
changes in BLFS for OOo and no-pam/text cleanups and I'm off to build
KDE to see what happens. OOo/firefox will be on hold till this is
resolved. If I can see the error, I'll rebuild glibc with the patch and
see what the result is. Actually, the debian or other redhat bug had a
simple test case IIRC...maybe that'll tickle it.
