Well this dufus had some inspiration whilst slurping his spaghetti. I thought - hey, there are two nics in the box, I wonder if that and modules has anything to do with it. Indeed, as modules I had control over what name I gave to each nic, compiled into the kernel the one I have the wire plugged into had become eth1. Thanks for responding - a great part of problem solving is asking questions.
