Similar idea, but not quite the same. In the case you describe, the device responsible is the network card the cable is connected to - it *is* sending events when it detects or loses a link, but they're not the kind of events handled by the Linux hotplugging framework. They can, however, be handled by other programs, such as ifplugd as Alexander suggested. Simon.
