Sounds like something I observed when playing with the 7.0 RCs - the X server would exit shortly after starting, complaining on the console about not being able to find the Fixed font. In my case, the problem was simply that I'd not installed one of the font packages, although from memory it can also be reproduced if the "fonts/misc" directory isn't in the FontPath in xorg.conf. Jan - is this more or less what's happening with you, or completely different? If so, what environment are you trying to run? Default is probably TWM, which I don't think uses font-config, but instead uses the traditional X font setup (i.e FontPath entries). Maybe your xorg.conf file doesn't point to all the font directories? Simon.
