Oh, I see what the problem is. To reproduce it I had to rm -rf
/usr/share/fonts.
You don't have any TrueType fonts in fontconfig's search path.
You need to make a symbolic link from /usr/share/fonts to wherever
you've installed Xwindows TrueType fonts.
