Which book are you following? Must be SVN as that has GNOME-2.12.
Looks like you either missed a couple commands or were unfortunate
enough to install Xorg before the newer font information went in.

To just get some fonts in /usr/share/fonts, make two symlinks (this
info is now on the Xorg-7.0 page):

ln -svn $XORG_PREFIX/lib/X11/fonts/OTF /usr/share/fonts/X11-OTF &&
ln -svn $XORG_PREFIX/lib/X11/fonts/TTF /usr/share/fonts/X11/TTF

where XORG_PREFIX obviously is /usr in your case. Now, get that <dir>
out of /etc/fonts/fonts.conf! There's a lot of crappy fonts that you
don't want fontconfig to use.

Also, see the X Components page that has a lot of new info about
installing TrueType fonts that fontconfig will use:

This would seem to be a result of X not exiting cleanly, i.e. gnome
didn't have a chance to stop gnome-panel on its own.

OK, let's back up a bit. Can you start a basic X session? If you
don't have a .xinitrc file, startx will use the default xinitrc. This
will start the horrendous twm window manager. (You need to have twm
installed, but you should if you installed all the packages in Xorg).
Try to start an X session with twm. If that works, then we know Xorg
is working properly.

To me, it seems like you have an issue with X since it's crashing
before gnome can even start.
