Out of curiosity, which backend are you using with Totem - libxine,
gstreamer 0.8 or 0.10?
Probably not gstreamer-0.10 if he's watching DVDs since the plugins
haven't been ported yet.
I'm finding that while gstreamer 0.10 is a huge improvement in
performance and stability, it's not able to play a lot of video formats
that totem handled fine on 0.8. I've reverted to using xine for movies,
since I'd rather not keep gstreamer 0.8 around in parallel.
I just installed them in parallel the other day, and it seemed to go
fine. The reason was because some app I wanted to use still wanted
gstreamer-0.8. The two versions don't seem to conflict at all. But I
agree that it's not a setup I like to maintain.
Hopefully, the plugin support for 0.10 will get better really soon.
It does seem to perform much better than 0.8.
