Funny you should mention that. I stayed up way too late last night
re-installing the whole GTK/Gnome2.14 (with 2.14.2 patches) from the
ground up, now using the /usr/libexec/$package method. Before
restarting X, I carefully killed all X- and gnome-related processes and
deleted all /tmp files used by Gnome; I double-checked my XDG_{whatever}
paths and started up.

Now all the icons appear correctly, but yet again my contacts list is
gone! I cleaned out my test user's entire /home directory so there
would not be any previous config files in place, started up again so
Gnome could build whatever it wanted from scratch, and it still won't
let me add contacts... the menu option is there, but does nothing when I
click on it. And when it's working, an empty contact list comes up with
a message in the contacts window saying there are no contacts; when it
doesn't work, that window is blank when there is an empty contacts list.

It must be some other config option I put into evolution or
evolution-data-server, but I have no idea what I did differently the
time it worked vs. the times it failed. I swear, it's times like these
I'm just about ready to give up and go to Ubuntu. {whimper}
