I've been using gutenprint (formerly the development version of
gimp-print) for a long while because I could never get 4.2 to
understand my printer. If you are on x86, the following package
versions should be built in this order:
gimp-2.2.12 configure with --disable-print (I think that stops it
trying to link to libgimp-print). On one of my athlon64s I also
need --disable-mmx.
ufraw-0.9.1 (optional, for raw photos) CMMI --prefix=/usr. I also
add --enable-extras. If you use raw photos you need to read the docs
because the configure switches and dependencies vary between camera
types.
cups-1.2.2 CMMI, just ./configure without any options. I also chown
-v lp:lp /var/spool/cups{,/tmp} but that probably isn't necessary.
ghostscript-8.15.1 as in the book, plus the fonts.
foomatic-filters-3.0.2 (possibly optional, but I think most home
printers will need it to print text documents). CMMI --prefix=/usr
[ see linuxprinting.org ]
gutenprint-5.0.0 CMMI --prefix=/usr --with-gimp2
(I also use the deprecated --disable-static, the reason why that is
deprecated is in the docs).
After that, start up the cups bootscript, set up and test printer,
and you should be good to print pictures from within the gimp.
