OK, I've attached the diff -u . The only graphics-related change I
can see is that "CONFIG_FIRMWARE_EDID=y" has appeared. I'll have a go
at turning that off this evening (have to go to work soon). Otherwise
I'm stumped.
That would definitely affect it. EDID is the VESA protocol used to
find out from the BIOS about your graphics card. For some cards (I
think), they'll only set the mode according to what the BIOS says it
can do. I would try turning that option off. There are also different
ways to set an explicit modeline in xorg.conf, but I can't really
recall. I'm not a guru here, but I read the Xorg mailing list, and
mode setting is something people write in about all the time.
Could you attach your Xorg.log? You might also want to try asking on
the Xorg list, although I'm sure they'll tell you to upgrade.
