I seem to remember running into this with other distros, and I believe
the fix had something to do with user lp's passwd and root's group
assignment. Unfortunately I don't remember exactly what I did that
finally "fixed it", but I do remember doing what I've said and it
worked. Maybe this will make sense to someone else and give the
definitive answer.
