That's correct. Glib (and Gtk+) 2.x are essentially a new library from
1.x - they're completely incompatible. Fortunately, there aren't too
many programs still using the older version, but if you encounter one,
the newer library versions cannot be made to work.

The 1.x libraries *can* be installed in parallel with the 2.x versions,
but since they've been unmaintained for years, you'd likely have trouble
building them on a new system. Much easier to find alternatives to the
few programs that require them.
