Shouldn't be the Expat library added at least to optional dependencies?
In fact I haven't install expat so far, but Xorg seems to have installed
expat 1.5 library itself.
Expat is a dependency of Fontconfig, which is required for Xorg. So,
you should already have Expat if you've been following the book.
We try pretty hard to make it so that you can get the order right on
the packages. Occasionally things are missed, but you should be able
to get a working system if you follow the Required and Recommended
Dependencies.
