The CC-ND license says "You may not alter, transform, or build > upon this work." Does that mean that hints such as these > <http://archives.linuxfromscratch.org/mail-archives/hints/2006-October/ > 003399.html> (that build on the package user concept) are not > acceptable? Copyright protects the expression of ideas, not the ideas themselves (the latter would be the realm of patents). I have just skimmed the hint you linked and it doesn't seem to include portions (modified or unmodified) from my hint, so it seems that it does not qualify as a derivative work under copyright law. Therefore it would seem to be okay. Things that would not be permitted without my permission are for example: - Creating a hint (or any kind of text) that contains portions from my hint (either verbatim or modified). - Creating a translation of my hint. - Creating an excerpt of my hint (e.g. removing the appendix and leaving everything else untouched) Note, that the more-control-helpers scripts are published under a less restrictive license, so the above doesn't apply to them. And fair use quoting is also permissible, of course, so when people asking for help on the support list quote parts of the hint, that is not copyright infringement, as long as the quoted parts are small and properly attributed.
