That's true, I'm used to use timidity but this is also a working solution
to play midifiles with fluidsynth and audacious:
-) Install fluidsynth
-) Recompile the audacious-plugins (I assume we are talking about a 1.2.x 
version of audacious). Audacious-plugins needs to find fluidsynth at compile 
time (or a MIDI Hardware, or timidity)
-) Run audacious, open preferences->plugins->preferences->fluidsynth-backend
and add the path to an .sf2 file (soundfonts files, they are used to render 
sound)
-) Enjoy your midifiles collection with audacious :-)
