Try looking through dmesg (use dmesg|less) and see what the kernel thinks it finds for NICs during bootup? Also, if you haven't already, install pciutils (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/general/pciutils.html) so you can see what the system can see on the bus.
