I can second that Avahi is awesome. Yes, you need libdaemon. It's just
the author's convenience library for running daemons so that they can
chroot, drop privileges, reload configuration on SIGHUP, etc. It's a
straight ./configure --prefix=/usr, make, make install.

I would also suggest looking at his nss-mdns module to allow resolving
hostnames on multicast networks. It's very convenient if you have
multiple machines doing multicasting on the same network.

$ getent hosts silky.local
192.168.1.2     silky.local
