I've given up trying to solve this one alone... I have my /etc/hosts
file set up properly, I have loopback support working fine (ping
127.0.0.1 works) and I have networking support working (ping
google.com works). But, for some reason, ping localhost fails.
localhost is in the /etc/hosts file with 127.0.0.1 as the ip address.
I first realized that this was a problem when I got X and Xfce
compiled (by the way, I have a script to compile X if anyone is in
need...) and startxfce4 shows up "Unable to find water.example.net (my
computer's name as per hostname and /etc/hosts has an appropriate
entry)..." Any clue on where to start looking would be greatly
appriciated...
