I don't know a lot about gnome, just used it a few times, but finally
chosen for KDE in my LFS system. But what i've wanted to say is that
installing problems other than there default location mostly gives a
lot of problems. I had this with my KDE too. If you're really out of
luck, you could symlink the files in /etc/gnome to /etc, then the
problem would probably be fixed, but it's a real dirty solution..
