My thanks to Lauri & Ken for their assistance with my queries. A look at 'cat /proc/ide/ide0/hda/settings' shows,amongst other things, that dma is enabled, which was the most pressing concern, plus i remember noticing during my kernel-config that the "enable dma by default" option had disappeared, so i guess that current kernels enable it without our input...
