Other list-members please correct me if i'm wrong, but i think you ought
to be using ATI's closed-source driver with that card rather than the
ati-drivers from Xorg, at least if you want to have Direct Rendering
capability.

Last i heard, the open-source driver only supported DRI for cards up to
but not including the R300 series (Radeon 9500).

The closed-source driver from ati.com installs a kernel-module, fglrx.ko
(so needs to be able to find the kernel-sources), along with X-support &
some utilities including their own version of 'xorgconfig' which creates
a new xorg.conf with the appropriate device-section for the detected card.

Although i've used the closed-source driver in the past (my RV280,
Radeon 9200SE works with either), it was always on Gentoo systems, so i
have no experience of installing it under BLFS.

I don't wish to confuse matters, so if anyone can confirm or refute the
above, or provide better information, please do so.
