This is probably of no help, but I too have experienced the same problem with the i810 driver (on an IBM NetVista P4 2.4 if it makes a difference). I chalked it up to the fact that this was a completely experimental build. I didn't take it much further and have since formatted the drive and set it up as a test krb5 server (no gui). Just curiosity, are you changing video mode on the console when booting?
