Victory!!

I pulled in xf86-video-intel-2.1.1, and set the driver in xorg.conf to
"intel". (I also tried xf86-video-intel-2.1.99, but had some module
version mismatch problems.)

I even got direct rendering for free! :-) When I launch glxgears, they
spin merrily. However, if I try to resize the glxgears window, X--and
then the entire machine--locks up (ctrl-alt-F1 doesn't work). I'm
willing to live with this for now; in a few weeks, I might see if a
kernel upgrade fixes this.

This also fixed the console redraw problems (blank screen on leaving
X) that I had as well. Awesome!

To those who helped: Thanks a whole lot. To those who had the same
problem: Please let us know if xf86-video-intel-2.1.1 works.
