If that solves it, the problem is either that gcc-4.3 has got more picky about undeclared variables, or that glibc has moved things around. A similar patch (probably the reason the gentoo bug was closed) is at http://sources.gentoo.org/viewcvs.py/gentoo-x86/kde-base/arts/files/arts-1.5.9-glibc2.8-build-fix.patch?view=markup Note: those both apply to arts-1.5.9.
