I also edited cupsd.conf which did not have " allow localhost"
to now do ( to be identiofical to cupsd in fedora9 where
the printer works) . And still no test page is printed via the browser
interface.
I then attached an old epson c66 and again switched the browser interface
on. This time the printer is 'seen' as is the recommended ppd. I still
did not get a testpage to print though. I was able to pint from kwrite for
both root and an unpriviledged user with the c66. However the kde-printer
utility (from the start menu) still did not function.
I also upgraded udev (with boot-script et al) from version 133 ro 141
hoping that udevadm info would work. After a nervous upgrade udevadm info
still gave the inexplicable nonsense I reported earlier. I browsed the kde
system-info-centre and got hold of the serial number of the DX6000 printer.
I then created a rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/93-epson_DX6000
SUBSSYTEM=="usb", ATTRS{serial}="serial-number",SYMLINK+="epson_DX6000"
(succeeding this is 92-printer.rule).
But it made no difference.
For the DX6000, it may be a problem with the driver I selected from the
gutenprint PPD's. I have some foomatic/ppds installed also. I will
fiddle with these also to see if I get lucky and report my findings.

and any enlightenment why I cant get a testpage via the cups browser interface
(for a printer that is 'working' ) will be gratefully received.
