In general, requirements are only minimums, so if (for example) gerby
requires gtk+ 2.4.14, it should also work with 2.8.x (or even 2.16.x).
So try installing the more recent versions, and worry about parallel
install if problems come up.

As a guideline, any package *should* be compatible with any previous
version with the same major version number (gtk 2, for example).
