Hi,
LFS 6.5, BLFS svn, VMWare Player, fluxbox
I am very impressed with LFS and BLFS!
This is my first post here, so, I will be a little long describing my LFS and
BLFS backgrounds, before asking help about the sound problem.
I need a virtual machine, as I am running a 64bit host, to properly use some
internet pages with 32bit only compatible softwares. For this purpose, I am
proud to say that my LFS virtual guest is successful, but not as a replacement
for other distros as a main machine. I am not a very experienced linux user,
switched from windows only about a year ago.
Installed several packages in the LFS machine: OOo_3.3.1 (when trying to open
files, cannot find hidden files or directories), gnucash-2.2.9 (needed to
install many gnome dependencies), grsync-0.9.1 (this solved problem of rsync
running too slow, don't know the reason), firefox-3.5.3 (cannot switch language
in menus), thunderbird-2.0.0.23 (works fine, but problem with a message in the
bottom panel), seamonkey-1.1.18 (I think the problem comes from canvas: some
fonts and some other parts of the pages are too too big, pages become useless,
so I have to use the binaries available from Mozilla), vlc-1.0.2,
PCManFM-0.5.1, pulseaudio-0.9.18.
In order for some of these to work, I have used information from this list,
concerning d-bus issues (I think it was in some KDE4 topic). I thought a lot in
asking here about those above issues, but as I considered lots of things had to
be done, only now, without a clue on how to solve the sound problem, have
decided to start posting here, and only in the future will ask, if I may, help
for the other minor issues.
I have no sound.
ALSA installed as instructed (alsa-lib-1.0.21, alsa-firmware-1.0.20,
alsa-plugins-1.0.2, alsa-oss-1.0.17, alsa-utils-1.0.21). However, could not
follow the book with speex-1.0.5, but needed to install speex-1.2rc1, instead,
because pulseaudio-0.9.18 needed a software not included in the earlier version.
Can run alsamixer, but speaker-test displays a never ending repeated message
...

Only the "Time per period" fluctates. I can see that the virtual hardware is
found, as the sound icon is turned on by the test.
The driver seems to be correct, I could see in alsamixer and in some other
command I cannot remember now, had to recompile the kernel to include as M.
lshw output shows

amixer output is like the following:

Front Left: Playback 56 [89%] [-10.50dB] [off]
Front Right: Playback 56 [89%] [-10.50dB] [off]
...
The other controls have similar parameters. Does "off" mean they are really
off, or the range is [-10.50dB] to [off]?
Those are the relevant infos I can remember.
Please, help me, don't know what else to do.
