 Thanks for the reply.

I had the debug log on the older build, so I've just edited it on this
one (the current 6.6 system), bounced cups, and given it another try.

The results (from firefox's file->print) were slightly scary: the dialog
window stayed grey for something like a minute and a half (instead of
appearing, but with 'print' greyed out).  Fortunately, it did eventually
appear in full.

The lines from access_log and error_log during this are attached -
different error number, and I get the impression it was spinning
somewhere. [ now at http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/~ken/tmp/
 - the error log is 100K ]

Printing isn't the problem - if I wait, the dialog does appear, and then
I can print.  Well, I say that, better give it a try. I've been cancelling the
print jobs up until now. ... /me wonders why the dialog appears with
print-to-file as the only option (greyed out) and stays that way, then
remembers to restart cups (I'd stopped it to disable the debug logging
again).  Prints fine.

You set your printer as the default in cups, right ?  Building cups
before gtk+ gives access to the queues, and to the driver / cups
options (job, quality, advanced tabs).

  No, I don't need them : cups -> ghostscript -> gutenprint
 (Epson r360).
