You may be right, but now that I went so far through the BLFS book, I hope to 
end up with a working GNOME and web browser.
I indeed encountered some problems underway, but so far, I could solve them all 
with the help of Google and also a little bit of thinking.

But this time, I am really struggling with this problem and simply dropping 
everything and restarting with newer versions does not satisfy me.
I want to understand what's causing this problem.  Is it 
/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstaudioresample.so (the last lib mentioned in the 
log file before the error line)
or is it dbus or something with liboil (I found reports about incompatibility 
between ALTIVEC detection and PPC) or is it a time-out because my CPU is too 
slow or is short in memory?

Any suggestion is welcome...
