 I have played wav files  from /usr/share/sounds/alsa  both at command prompt 
before  startkde and in konsole.
but I still get a dummy for   the sound device in kde.

in  one  instance when I did not get a dummy  I got  KDE start/and/exit sounds  
but no CD-sound.  

The thing's a joke.

I think its hal and  that consolekit  mulaki.  I hope its ditched by kde-4.6 
with kdesolid.
