UPDATE:-

I purged everything cups, gutenprint, hal, consolekit and re-compiled
On restart the printer is not seen.

root [ ~linteg ]# /usr/sbin/lpinfo -v
network http
direct scsi
network lpd
network socket
network ipp
root [ ~linteg ]#

root [ ~linteg ]# ls /usr/lib/cups/backend
http ipp lpd parallel scsi serial snmp socket usb
root [ ~linteg ]#

In otherwords the usb backend is not reported by lpinfo. (HAL decides this
and missing from the the cups backend is a perl script named 'beh' and an
executible called 'hal'. Does anyone jnow the origin of these?
