I upgraded to gpl-ghostscript-9.00 and thankfully the
"usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed" seems to have gone.

BUT I still cannot print. ( I long suspected hal has been getting in the
way):-

Here is conundrum:-

a) If one does not install 'hal-cups-utility',
( http://www.t2-project.org/packages/hal-cups-utils.html )
which seem to (grab hold of ~?/dev/usb/lpN ), the printer is not 'seen' even
on the cli and/or when localhost:631 is invoked for configuring the
printer.

b) The latest version of system-config-printer
( http://cyberelk.net/tim/software/system-config-printer/ )
is reported to bypass hal for udev but I never managed to get it to work.:

---------------system-config-printer
linteg [ ~ ]# system-config-printer
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/system-config-printer.py", line 93,

  File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/jobviewer.py", line 27, in <module>
    import pynotify
ImportError: No module named pynotify

I havent a clue where to get pynotify from or how to avoid its dependency.

suggestions welcomed
