By "rootless" do you meant that you want to start xorg a a user and not
root? I have always started xorg with a bootscript that does:

su - andy -c xinit 2&> /var/log/x-session.errors

IE, it uses "su - andy" to run xinit

I don't know much about direct rendering, the only 3d app I use is
Google Earth (on 32 bit systems). It seems to work OK. If I start xorg
as a user or root it doesn't seem to make any difference.
