        Here's what I did.

        On the Alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/DigitalOut, it gave me this command:

                cat /proc/asound/devices

        ...which showed my device (one of them) as:

                17: [ 0- 1]: digital audio playback

        So, when specifying your device, it would be hw:0,1 or hw:0.1.

        For instance, in mplayer, to specify your digital device for playback 
in mplayer, 
do:

                mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=0.1 <name of your song>

        I hope this helps anyone else with this situation.  

        So, just for the record (and google), S/PDIF for the Asus P7P55D 
Motherboard on 
a Linux From Scratch system works.
