This is mostly directed to Andrew Benton but everybody can join in, of course.
Hi Andy, At your leisure, I'd like to compare notes with you, if I may. Three items. I might as well start with this one: Item No 1. --------------------------------------------- Alex: Bitches that he lost the Back/Forward navigation arrows on 3.6.14 and 15, "_after_ a few point upgrades of GTK+-2". He points to his Bug No 640850, for the curious. Andy: You can fix the back and forward arrows by setting a gtk theme. Pointers on setting themes ... Alex (comments as of this writing): 1.1. To make a LONG story short, I haven't been able to "recover" my arrows so far. 1.2. Mozilla came up with 3.6.16 a few days ago. Based on past experience, I wouldn't be at all surprised that this one has the arrows back, like nothing ever happened. Also, the fast cadence (although not unusual for Firefox), 14, 15, 16 don't look good. 1.3. Icing on the cake! A few hours ago, I get this "automatic" e-mail. In summary: Comment #1 from Sven Joachim <[email protected]>, 2011-03-25 12:02:34 PDT About Bug #640850 [Alex: Lost Back/Forward Arrows] This appears to be a duplicate of Bug 621962. ------ If you have have the time, inclination and a strong stomach, you might want to take a quick look at Bug 621962. My opinion, in general, is that if you (inadvertently) drop a feature and/or introduce a new bug, you don't fix the situation with a Theme. A piece of software must stand up by itself on its basic functionality. Item No 2. --------------------------------------------- Alex: 'libpng' with or without "apng" is an exercise in futility: one MUST comment out, # ac_add_options --with-system-png Andy: No, it builds fine --with-system-png here. Alex (comments as of this writing): I tried my damnedest; each time I use "--with-system-png" the compile fails about 1/3 of the way with some crazy problem with ranlib libimglib2_s.a in sub-directory `/usr/src/firefox-build/modules/libpr0n/src'. Question (and puzzlement): In your Mar 22, 2011 12:36:43 PM comment > my current mozconfig looks like this: > ... there's no "--with-system-png" line. Whatever. Is it possible that your success and my failure are caused by us running different versions of 'libpng'? Mine is, as mentioned, 1.5.1 (the latest, to my knowledge). (_With_ its matching "apng", of course.) Note: see above (and in general) the "miscommunication" between Firefox and its supporting packages (like gtk). All of a sudden, a change ("upgrade") in a package breaks the whole mozillah. Item No 3. --------------------------------------------- Alex (comments as of this writing): My Firefox 4.0 (once built and installed OK :) crashes with "segmentation fault" on certain sites. As Mozilla people like to say: << Well, this is embarrassing. Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is usually caused by a recently opened web page. >> I'm not losing much sleep over it, I can be wrong like most of the time, BUT, like I said, "I wouldn't be at all surprised" that this problem will vanish - like nothing ever happened - in future version, 4.3.16 :). And, as they say in the movies, we'll always have 3.6.16. (Opera too). I'm choosing what I think is one of the most universal sites, (other. maybe, than those covering "Hot Ukrainian Girls"), "The New York Times": 'www.nytimes.com' (hope you're not in one of them Middle East countries where sites like the one I picked are out of reach!). The Crash happens when I scroll down (by bar or mouse) a little bit from the main (original) screen. Question: With your Linux compiled-from-sources Firefox-4.0, does it happen to you too on this site (and/or some others, for that matter)? Note: NOT the Windows 7 binary which works. Thanks for your help, patience and understanding. -- Alex -- http://linuxfromscratch.org/mailman/listinfo/blfs-support FAQ: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/faq.html Unsubscribe: See the above information page
