 Have you had Xorg working on this machine before ?  If so, look at
any xorg.conf in that system and compare it to your xorg.conf.new,
particularly for the video options.

 I'm not sure of the versions you have built, but I'd be inclined to
try the latest xorg-server from the same series (I guess that will
be 1.9.5), and similarly the latest ati video driver from the same
series, and if that doesn't help, the latest video driver
(6.14.something, when I last looked) - if that will build (might
need newer dependencies somewhere).
