Well that sed as presented in the book is wrong. It should be:
sed -i -e '/^EXTRALIBS/s/ -ldl/ -lfreetype -lz/' \
-e '/=imdi/aSHARE_EXPAT=1' Makefile
Andy, do you want to fix it?
I can't help with more than that as I have a PS printer and don't need
gutenprint.
