I've never known sed to be confused by newlines within quotes. It will accept multiple commands separated by newlines or semicolons. I suspect the user was confused because he didn't get the command prompt back after he pressed return, a situation that would have also occurred if the sed was written in your style. I've changed the sed so it is all on one line now.
