Just a comment. Although it's not convenient, you can always get around pkg-config with CFLAGS and LDFLAGS or some other environment settings, so strictly speaking, it's not a required dependency. That said, I have no problems with making it required for those packages that use it. The reason we removed it from LFS is that pkg-config now has a circular dependency with glib (and glib has other required packages). See the BLFS glib page.
