Don't top post.

Try running startx.  It sets things up better and then calls xinit.

If you don't have ~/.xinitrc set, you probably will get a black screen. 
  Use:

$ cat ~/.xinitrc

xterm  -g 80x40+0+0   &
xclock -g 100x100-0+0 &
twm
